In my opinion, any pumpkin is a good pumpkin! I love, love, LOVE pumpkins (ask my husband, I have a problem). To me, they symbolize Autumn in so many ways and bring life and joy into our home after a hot and dry summer here in the PNW.
I love heading to a local farm to pick out our fair share of pumpkins as early as possible, so we really get our money’s worth. I also get to enjoy them for a little bit longer too! I’m also not opposed to plastic pumpkins either. We actually have a few of those in our home from when we lived in Chicago, when lugging large, heavy pumpkins on the train wasn’t our idea of a fun time.
Have you already grabbed some pumpkins to decorate your home? If not, there is still time! Here are a few reasons why I believe they truly are the best investment when it comes to decorating your home this autumn.
It supports small, local farmers - First and foremost, as a small business owner myself, I love supporting other small businesses in our community. We actually went to two different patches this year to spread the love. They were super small farms and were a little more off the beaten path, so it was nice to mix it up. If you can’t make it out to a patch, a lot of our grocery stores purchase pumpkins from nearby farms as well.
Talk about easy clean up! - As hard as it is for me to toss my perfect little hand picked pumpkins, it really is easy to do. We toss ours directly into our compost bin after Thanksgiving and we are done. Easy and great for the environment. If you have your own compost pile, that would work too!
Side note: We’ve never been a fan of roasted pumpkin seeds, but I know so many people that love them. Maybe give that a try?
Side note #2: If you purchase fresh pumpkins, guess what..you don’t have to store them either, which is always nice.
It’s a special event - Pumpkins are only around for a certain amount of time, so they really are a special treat. We don’t have any kids (we pack up Marcy!) and head to the patch for a special afternoon. If you have kids, then you already know how fun of a day it will be at a pumpkin patch, don’t miss out on the memories!
Pumpkins make a big impact - You can purchase them in September and leave them out until December 1st if you want (as long as they aren’t carved). If this isn’t a set it and forget it moment, then I don’t know what is! They last a long time on their own, so you really do get you money’s worth of decor over the span of several months. For your outdoor decor, they are perfect! They are quite visible from the road (you can see our pumpkins from the road in a photo below), which is nice because it helps spread some autumn cheer.
Extremely versatile - This might be the biggest pro of them all. They are such a versatile fruit! They can be used as decor inside or outside, stacked on top of each other, and can moved around if you are hosting an event without much issue. There are so many shapes, sizes, and colors too, so there is bound to be a pumpkin just for you and your needs. I’ve seen so many crafts using pumpkins these days too. Endless possibilities!
Your pumpkin decor this autumn doesn’t have to be an overload of 100 pumpkins on your porch (although, I admit I would love that - just so expensive!), it doesn’t have to be all real pumpkins, and it doesn’t have to be the fancy Cinderella pumpkins that are pricey and in some places, hard to find. Grab what you love in the quantity that makes you happy, and fits within your budget. :)
Below are a few ways that we have used pumpkins outside and inside our home this year. We kept it simple, but I really like the way it all turned out. Just enough to spread some autumn cheer indoors and out!
